Retirement presents the perfect opportunity to accomplish the many things you always wanted to do but never had time for when you were working and/or raising a family. However, now that you have time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do, it’s can be hard to get motivated to do them. That’s where having a bucket list comes in.

If you’ve never heard of a bucket list, it’s simply an inventory of things you want to accomplish before you “kick the bucket.” Writing a list of this nature is a great way to think about what you want and what’s important to you.

Where to start: brainstorm ideas

When you sit down to write down your bucket list, ask yourself the following questions:

Things to include on your list

There’s no shortage of things you can include on your bucket list. Whether you want to experience an adrenaline rush from something like skydiving, see new places while travelling, learn a new language or start a new hobby, the only limit is your imagination.

Be specific when writing your list. It’s easier to accomplish something concrete like learning to speak French or visiting the Colosseum in Rome than it is to do something more abstract like learn a foreign language or travel the world.

The things on your bucket list might also serve as a great way to relive key moments in your life or prioritize spending more time with the people you love. For example, you may want to go back to the place you fell in love or connect with your grandchildren or great-grandchildren in a place that is special to you.

How to stay motivated

No matter how simple or lofty your goals are, you’ll need some motivation to check everything off on your list. You may find it helpful to share your plans with loved ones or even recruit them to join you on your adventures. You can even make it a competition! How many friends can you convince to take the challenge with you?
