Dr. Azim Jamal, President and Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Jamal is a Family Physician who completed training at both UBC Medical School and the UBC Family Practice Residency Program. Dr. Jamal’s experience during training provided him with insight into the shortfalls of delivery of care to the elderly. Dr. Jamal has a solid understanding of the needs of seniors from a medical perspective, as well as knowledge of the development and management of seniors' housing communities.

Tony Baena, Vice President, Operations

Tony is an MBA and Certified General Accountant who has diverse and wide-ranging experience with a variety of customer service providers.   He has an extensive background in senior finance, operations and human resources roles.  Tony is responsible for operations and is committed to creating a balanced perspective on all elements of the business including financial, quality, service and people.

Kevin Carlson, Chief Financial Officer

Kevin is a Chartered Accountant and is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership to Retirement Concepts. In addition to overseeing the company's financial and regulatory reporting, treasury management and taxation matters, Kevin works with the management team on the financial analysis of operations and the evaluation of opportunities. Kevin has a diverse and extensive background acting as CFO for a number of organizations in a variety of industries, most recently in the life sciences area.

Leslie Karmazinuk, Director of Care
Planning and Delivery        

Leslie has been working with seniors both as a staff educator and facility manager for the past 7 years.  She has worked both as a Site Manager with Vancouver Coastal Health and as the Administrator/Director of Care at Guildford Seniors Village.  Leslie's responsibilities include monitoring the staffing models, acuity, standardization of our care delivery, mentoring and coaching of the site leaders, health authority liaison, risk monitoring and management.

Sue Ball, Regional Manager, Vancouver Island

Sue received her RN training in England and subsequently a Baccalaureate degree from the University of Victoria. She has fifteen years experience, first specializing in gerontology as a nurse, then as a Care Director, prior to becoming the Administrator of Nanaimo Seniors Village in 2001. In 2003/2004, Sue assisted with the planning, development, and opening of the Assisted Living facility and she now oversees both Assisted Living and Residential (Nursing) Care.

Julia Glover, Regional Manager, Lower Mainland

Julia Glover joined Retirement Concepts in May 2004 with the opening of Williams Lake Seniors Village. She is a Registered Nurse with her Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Gerontology.  In 2004, Julia graduated from Royal Roads University with her Masters in Business Administration.

Julia brings with her a wealth of experience working with seniors which includes Residential care, community work, establishing an Adult Day Centre in Williams Lake and was instrumental in the preparation and implementation of a 10 bed special care unit. The past 16 years of Julias working life has been dedicated to Residential Care.

Julia enjoys her role as Regional Manager and the challenges the role presents.  Julia believes in strong teamwork and she strives to create and preserve a resident focused approach to care.

Jean Wong , Director of Human Resources

Jean has extensive experience in human resources management, gained with a variety of industries and sectors ranging from large and complex public sector organizations to start up IT companies. She has successfully developed and implemented leadership competency models, change and transition management plans, organization effectiveness and employee engagement strategies, to meet both the tactical and strategic objectives of an organization. Jean believes in, and promotes a team oriented approach.. A native Vancouverite and graduate of UBC’s Faculty of Commerce, Jean keeps current on HR trends and issues through her CHRP certification.
