Life in Kamloops

City of Kamloops

Kamloops is located in south-central British Columbia, at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers. The third largest city in the BC interior and the "Tournament Capital of Canada," it maintains 84 municipal parks and world-class sporting facilities including several golf courses and Canada’s third largest ski resort, Sun Peaks. Kamloops has more than 200 lakes within an hour's drive. The area is widely recognized as a freshwater fishing hotspot (appropriate license(s) required). The landscape is quite variable. In addition to hundreds of lakes, there are many areas of dry forest, hilly areas that are largely treeless and grasslands that support several endangered species and contain trails for walking, hiking and mountain biking.

The residents savour urban entertainment, but also take pride in their western and native heritages. Kamloops offers all the amenities of a larger centre: an art gallery, a professional theatre company, a symphony orchestra, two museums, and cultural events such as the Wildlights Festival at Christmas and the International Film Festival in the spring. The Cowboy Festival is a cultural celebration of the ranching lifestyle and thousands of visitors take a trip back in time each summer on the restored steam locomotive 2141, the "Spirit of Kamloops."
