Located in the heart of some of the most beautiful farming landscape on Vancouver Island, Courtenay is the urban centre of the Comox Valley. The Comox Valley is a two-and-a-half hour drive north from Victoria, or a 75-minute drive from the ferry terminals of Departure Bay and Duke Point near Nanaimo. Today, Courtenay is one of Canada's fastest growing urban communities. With excellent shopping, accommodation and restaurants, Courtenay is also home to a new Public Contemporary Art Gallery and the Sid Williams Civic Theatre, the north-central Island's major performance centre.
Courtenay is the perfect off-hill base for skiing Mt. Washington (elevation 5,216 feet/1590 m) which has long been known for having good snow conditions from early in winter to well past Easter and having some of the deepest snow in the world. Mount Washington also provides excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in summer. Courtenay also boasts 5 year round golf courses, some of the best saltwater fishing on the Island and calm areas for kayaking.
Population
The City of Courtenay has a population of 22,500 (2005 Census update). The Comox Valley has a population of 60,000.

The average housing price in the Comox Valley rose by almost 35% from 1997 to 2004 which correlates with Comox Valley’s neighbouring communities of Parksville showing an increase of almost 45% and Nanaimo seeing over 37%.
