The History of Retirement Concepts
A note from Abdul Jamal, Founder and Chairman of Retirement Concepts:
I was born in Tanzania and was 19 years old when my father passed away in 1964. After he was gone, he left me with a transportation and groceries wholesaling company which I ran for seven years before moving to Canada in 1971. After moving to Canada, my wife Shamim and I got into groceries once again before moving into the egg business.
I found my true passion in 1988 when I built McIntosh Lodge in Chilliwack with some partners. Housing seniors has always been a challenge in British Columbia, because people have the perception of a depressing, institutional setting, and McIntosh Lodge was also susceptible to this fate. After McIntosh Lodge got into hard times, I took a gamble and purchased the business. Working it to its own success, we purchased a second seniors community in Victoria in 1996. After working hard with Shamim to manage the two communities, my son, Dr. Azim Jamal joined Retirement Concepts to help us manage the business.
After a few successful years of managing the two communities, we brought in my brother in law, Joe Moosa to help develop a new community in Nanaimo and in 2001, our third community, Nanaimo Seniors Village, was built. The rest is history.
Retirement Concepts is very much a family oriented company. My wife Shamim, son Azim, daughter Zahra, brother-in-law Joe, and myself manage a company with over 1500 staff caring for 2200 residents. My family and all of our employees work hard to make life easier for all 2200 residents in 17 seniors communities across British Columbia and in Quebec. Even though the company has grown to become so large, Retirement Concepts still maintains its family touch in everything it does.
We hope that you and your loved ones come and see how much passion and caring Retirement Concepts has for its seniors by visiting one of our communities today.
On Behalf of the entire Retirement Concepts family:
